July 22, 2008 - By Steve Jackman

I had the opportunity to play a couple rounds of golf at the new Legacy course at Sweetbriar in Avon Lake earlier this summer when I visited home.  If you grew up on the west side of Cleveland, like I did, Sweetbriar was one of those staple golf courses that you played rather frequently.  It’s recently been expanded and remodeled to navigate through the new housing development in the area.  Personally, this isn’t my favorite layout for golf, but the houses don’t come into play so often that it’s a distraction.  (Not that the houses ever should come into play, of course.)

The front nine has been around for about five years now, so it’s not necessarily “new.”  The problem is that playing 18 holes required pairing this nine with one of the original nine holes, which, frankly, aren’t kept up as well as the Legacy holes.  With the second Legacy nine now open, you’re able to get the full experience of a new golf course.

Still, that doesn’t mean the two nines are very similar to one another.  In fact, they have a number of differences that degrade the flow from front nine to back nine.  What is the reason for these differences?  Different designers for each nine.  One of the more notable differences is found on the greens.

Played the Legacy with a 2 for 1 coupon so I only paid 24 bucks for 18 and a cart. I would not pay the full price of 48 bucks though, especially driving from the East Side. Fair test, not overly difficult. Tons of roll off the fairways. Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were well manicured. Lots of short dogleg par 4's within the 340-400 range. Par 5's are all reachable in two. The lack of variety in the par 3's was bothersome. From the tips they were all playing about 160-180. Felt like a less flashy version of Stonewater as many of the holes are lined with subdivisional housing, which seriously detracts from the golf experience in my opinion. I would play again if I had the coupon agin. But it is simply too short of a course for a serious golfer like myself to play for nearly 50 bucks while coming from the East Side. I only hit driver twice. Shot 41-42, 83. Pros - Extremely well manicured for a public course. Great design of several short par 4's. Perfect amount of water. The trees that line the11th and 12th were very scenic. Cons- Too short. No variation on par 3's. A tad overpriced. Was waiting for 10 minutes on every hole because of slow play. Houses.

Just in case the stars are ever needed for compiling and average score, I'll give it a three. Not great, not awful.
